Some are claiming victory for the opposition because of reports that about 150 people walked out of Vice President Mike Pence’s Notre Dame commencement speech: “That’s great turnout!” tweeted one of them. “Thank you for everyone who showed courage by walking out.”

For journalists covering domestic policy, this past week poses some hard choices. Should we focus on the Trump budget’s fraudulence — not only does it invoke $2 trillion in phony savings, it counts them twice — or on its cruelty? Or should we talk instead about the Congressional Budget Office assessment of Trumpcare, which would be devastating for older, poorer and sicker Americans?

It is not surprising but it is deeply depressing that the Trump administration is reviving the “global gag rule” — so called because it bans U.S. financial assistance to nongovernmental health care organizations in foreign countries if they provide abortions or even utter the word to their patients in counseling them or referring them elsewhere.

WASHINGTON — President Trump arrived in Jerusalem this week with a most curious bit of information for Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

The Civil War is a tragic and unavoidable part of American history. The Confederacy lost, and the union was preserved. The Union’s monumental victory was one that absolutely deserves commemoration in public places because the Union was fighting for a right and good cause.

ATLANTA — By the time Georgia’s 6th District votes in the June 20 special congressional election, $40 million — perhaps more than $130 per ballot — will have been spent to pick one-435th of one-half of one of the three branches of one of America’s governments. This is an expensive funeral for Tip O’Neill’s incessantly quoted and increasingly inapplicable axiom that “All politics is local.”

Household debt has reached a new all-time high, and while the data do not indicate an imminent economic collapse, the debt binge cannot endure forever.

Tesla, the electric vehicle startup, did something remarkable last month: It surpassed Ford and GM to become the country’s most valuable car company based on market capitalization. Want to acquire Tesla? It would cost a cool $50 billion. GM’s worth a tad less. Ford’s value is about $45 billion.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — By now you’re exhausted by all the head-swiveling news — the terrorist slaughter in Manchester; the president’s trip to Everywhere; and investigation upon investigation of the possible collusion with Russia, obstruction of justice and liars by the dozen.

Please stop trying to find ways to impeach President Donald Trump, pleads Bob Hamilton of the Toronto Star: “As bad as Trump is, the United States could actually be in worse shape in the future if Mike Pence, his seemingly benign vice president, replaces him in the Oval Office. Indeed, Pence could well turn out to be a complete disaster as president for liberal-minded Americans. In sharp contrast to Trump, the former Indiana governor is a serious politician with extremist policy views that liberals seriously don’t like.”
